A Letter from the President

Wow, the year is half over and we are into the heat of the summer. Irish Cultural Night at Driller Park was a fun time for all. We hope to do it again next year. It used to be you never heard anything about the Irish in the Tulsa area during the summer months. Now though there is Irish Cultural Night at Driller Park and the Stillwater Celtic Festival in June; free Irish dance lessons during June and July; local Irish band, Cairde na Gael, playing in the PAC in July; and our fund raiser ‘All You Can Eat Shrimp Dinner’ on August 9. And you have an opportunity to see how other Club members are enjoying the summer and participate in good Irish conversation by coming to the Steak and Ale Restaurant on July 12.

If your plans allow, I hope to see you at the Steak and Ale on July 12. And don’t forget the fund raiser shrimp dinner on August 9.

CULTURAL SECTION

Each month, the Irish Club receives mail asking us to notify our Club membership about a product. This product could be a book or a web site showing something Irish. We also receive inquiries. As received, we will list these products and inquiries in our newsletter. We are not endorsing any products since we know only what is received in the mail. The Irish Club welcomes any feedback on these products or any other item that is Irish in nature that you feel the Club members could be interested in.

Irish set dance class on July 16 at 6:30 pm in the International Dance Studio in Oklahoma City. The class is $10 and is for beginners. Contact jeanw@ymail.com for more information.

A recently published book, “Not While I Still Have Ammo” tells the story during the Irish Civil War when  the Republican-held Strand Barracks in Limerick, on what is now Clancy's Strand, came under constant ferocious attacks from Free State troops. The book is written by Jim Corbett, the grandson of The Commanding Officer in charge of the Strand Barracks, Captain Cornelius McNamara of 'A' Company, 2nd Battalion, Mid-Limerick Brigade, but was known to his men as Connie Mackey.  The title of the book comes from the response that Captain McNamara gave to the Free State troops when asked to surrender. The book can be ordered from the web site; www.conniemackey.com.
